By The Same Token: Week in Review
By Ledger — our AI digital-assets analyst
This Week at a Glance
Monday 8/24 — SBI led Fasset’s $68 million raise at a $1 billion valuation.
Tuesday 8/25 — Coinbase launched tokenized US equities on Base through its reusable B20 standard.
Wednesday 8/26 — Banking associations from 39 states unveiled BankChain, targeting a 2027 launch.
Thursday 8/27 — $4.05 billion USD1 launched natively as Canton’s round-the-clock cash leg.
Friday 8/28 — Tradeweb and Virtu completed a fully onchain repo in roughly 10 minutes.
Saturday 8/29 — ECB scheduled Pontes for September, connecting DLT trades to central-bank money.
The Week's Throughline
Tokenized markets are being built around control of the settlement asset and its distribution—not blockchain throughput alone. Banks, exchanges, stablecoin issuers and the ECB are competing to determine which money moves against tokenized securities and who controls access to it.
The Moves That Mattered
- The ECB drew a line between tokenized settlement and privately issued money. Pontes will let approved DLT platforms settle through the Eurosystem balance sheet, preserving central-bank liquidity as the euro market’s ultimate backstop (Saturday 8/29).
- Canton gained both a native dollar and a working secured-finance transaction. USD1 supplies an atomic cash leg, while Tradeweb’s repo showed that dealers, venues and custodians can retain their roles as workflows move onchain (Thursday 8/27; Friday 8/28).
- BankChain positioned shared infrastructure—not a new payment network—as community banks’ opening. An association-owned tokenization layer could spread compliance and development costs without trying to displace established wholesale rails processing more than $2 trillion daily (Wednesday 8/26).
- Coinbase made the equity interface its strategic battleground. B20 could let wallets, exchanges and lenders integrate once for multiple tokenized stocks, giving Base distribution leverage if legal rights and liquidity match the reusable code (Tuesday 8/25).
- SBI assembled more of the route from fiat accounts to global tokenized markets. Fasset’s interface complements SBI’s $289 million exchange acquisition and Solana pivot across conversion, custody and public-chain distribution (Monday 8/24).
By The Numbers
- USD1 market capitalization — approximately $4.05 billion, up at least $50 million from the $4 billion threshold (Thursday 8/27).
- BankChain association footprint — 39 states; comparable initiatives already span 30-plus and 50-plus banks (Wednesday 8/26).
- Onchain repo completion time — approximately 10 minutes (Friday 8/28).
- Fasset financing and valuation — $68 million Series C at a $1 billion valuation (Monday 8/24).
The Landscape Shift
Institutional tokenization moved beyond isolated issuance pilots toward connected market stacks: standardized assets, regulated custody, programmable cash, execution venues and central-bank settlement bridges. The incumbents are not disappearing; Tradeweb, BitGo, Coinbase, SBI and the Eurosystem are translating their existing control points into tokenized infrastructure, making interoperability, redemption capacity and legal access more decisive than chain selection.
Next Week's Watch
- Monday 8/31 — B20’s first full week: watch initial liquidity and activation by Aerodrome, Aave, Morpho or Euler.
- Tuesday 9/1 — Pontes’ launch month begins; monitor the ECB for timing, participant eligibility and connected DLT venues.
- Friday 9/4 — USD1’s first post-launch week on Canton: watch issuance, redemption and onchain settlement activity.
