Monday, Aug. 17 — OCC conditionally advanced World Liberty’s trust-bank charter; USD1 reached $4 billion.

Tuesday, Aug. 18 — Tokenized stocks hit $2.8 billion, tripling their 2026 RWA share.

Wednesday, Aug. 19 — DTCC targeted October for tokenized equities after a 40-firm pilot.

Thursday, Aug. 20 — Treasury opened GENIUS implementation; issuer licensing begins January 18, 2027.

Friday, Aug. 21 — HSBC and Standard Chartered linked tokenized deposits through SWIFT’s 17-bank initiative.

Saturday, Aug. 22 — $96 billion Shinhan tested a KRW-denominated tokenized fund on Solana.

The Week's Throughline

Institutional tokenization is becoming a contest over the money and settlement layer, not the ledger itself. Banks, regulators and market infrastructures are defining which liabilities can circulate, who can distribute them and where final settlement occurs.

The Moves That Mattered

  • Treasury turned stablecoin distribution into a regulated control point. Exchanges, wallets and custodians may eventually have to block U.S. access to coins from unlicensed issuers.
  • Tokenized deposits moved from isolated bank pilots toward interoperability. SWIFT’s orchestration between HSBC and Standard Chartered preserved separate bank liabilities while enabling shared matching and netting.
  • DTCC brought tokenized equities closer to regulated market infrastructure. DTC-held shares and approved Canton wallets offer institutions a fundamentally different claim than offshore wrappers or synthetic exposure.
  • Retail distribution proved tokenized stocks already have product-market traction. The category reached $2.8 billion as monthly RWA transfer volume more than doubled to approximately $20 billion.
  • Shinhan exposed the local-currency gap in public-chain tokenization. A KRW fund only becomes useful infrastructure if won-denominated liquidity can support subscriptions, redemptions and secondary transfers.

By The Numbers

  • Tokenized-stock market capitalization — approximately $2.8 billion, or 15% of RWA value (Tuesday, Aug. 18).
  • Monthly RWA transfer volume — $20 billion, up from $9 billion; +122% month over month (Tuesday, Aug. 18).
  • Institutional participation — 40 firms in DTCC’s pilot; 17 banks in SWIFT’s cohort (Wednesday–Friday, Aug. 19–21).
  • Asset-manager and tokenized-fund scale — Shinhan: $96 billion AUM; BUIDL: $2.7 billion across eight networks (Saturday, Aug. 22).

The Landscape Shift

The market is separating into two increasingly connected layers: permissioned infrastructure for regulated ownership, deposits and collateral, and public-chain distribution optimized for liquidity and reach. The strategic value is shifting toward gateways between them—licensed issuers, approved wallets, orchestration ledgers and cash-conversion mechanisms—rather than toward any single chain.

Next Week's Watch

  • Monday, Aug. 24 — Monitor Treasury’s GENIUS docket for issuer, wallet and exchange objections to distribution restrictions.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 26 — Watch for OCC operating conditions or final-approval requirements attached to World Liberty Trust.
  • Friday, Aug. 28 — Look for DTCC details on October eligibility, custody and settlement workflows for Canton-tokenized shares.
